What a breath of fresh air! Would that we had such a lucid chronicler of events and motives in the US. Heaven knows we surely do need one.

Mr Klein’s kind words have gotten me thinking again as to where my research may have gone had I not been viciously and unlawfully attacked at Manoa in February 1989 (a battle that continues to this day as noted elsewhere). I have said Afghanistan (along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) would have been very likely subjects. Plus I recall myself as of 1988 starting to reflect upon Hawaii’s unique economy, and also upon the (rather dismal) state of academic economics in America. Because of the battle I have hardly had a chance all these years to write about the US economy. In 1992-1993 and 1994-5 I wrote a little about US macroeconomics while in Washington and New York but these were seen only by a few friends (including I am honoured to say, the late Milton Friedman). The fact I finally have been able to publish a little about the US economy after the 2008 crisis (in “October 1929 Not!”, and “America’s divided economists”) tells me I likely would have done much more.
