Apropos the previous comment, I agree it’s a “big ask” but so were, at the time, the more or less peaceful end to South African apartheid and USSR totalitarianism. It does need gutsy people at the top like De Klerk, Gorbachev…

Apropos the previous comment, a multi-party democracy in Mainland China would probably have to follow a Constitutional Convention or Constituent Assembly and a referendum too.

The PRC says Tibetans & Uyghurs are happy under PRC rule, and that most Taiwanese want re-unification with the Mainland. I think this should be put to the test by referenda in Tibet, E. Turkestan (Xinjiang) & Taiwan.
